Welcome to the RIA! I would like to invite you to take this opportunity to introduce yourself to your fellow RIA'ers. Don't worry, we don't bite. Well, okay, we do bite, but we'll buy you dinner first. I'll start! My nation is Shizensky. I founded the RIA in June of 2004 and it has led to some of my best online memories. I've met a lot of really great people here and I'm happy to keep that going. My favorite sport is American football, and I'm a huge Cleveland Browns fan. I'm an IT guy, with my specialties being web development and database management. I spend way too much time on Reddit, and I calm down at night by watching some shows on Netflix with my wife. We just finished The IT Crowd ( so sad it's over ) and we're watching How I Met Your Mother for the first time. When I'm not focusing on work, school, my wife and 3 boys, or the RIA, I'm usually in my back yard shooting my bow or trying to teach my oldest boy how to fly my RC helicopter. He recently taught me that if the heli goes out of range of the remote, it will just keep doing whatever it was doing when it lost the signal. I didn't think those things could go that high...

Well hello all. My nation is Tierra de Madre, on here I go by Tierra or Tee. I joined the RIA back in 2004 also, so I've shared a lot of laughs with this place. Feels like I grew up with a bunch of these guys sometimes. My favourite sport is Australian rules football, and I couldn't name a single American football team except for Cleveland Browns (because it's in Shizensky's post...) I travel a lot, play sport and music, write and draw. I love animals and have a lot of pets. We even used to have a kangaroo, but that is definitely not the norm in Australia. Looking forward to hearing from the rest of you! Tierra. I didn't think those things could go that high... Did you get the helicopter back?

Eventually. The wind carried it across the highway behind our house and it landed in a ditch. It didn't come back down until the battery died.
I tried looking up Australian rules football, and my guess is that it's a rugby/Quidditch hybrid?

Haha. Yeah pretty much. Many people say it's similar to Gaelic football, but I don't know what Gaelic football is like so I can't confirm or deny that statement.
It's pretty confusing the first time you watch a game... and no one else plays it except for us, so you'll probably never watch a game from where you are.

Hello, my nation is Brave Free World nice to meet you and pleasure to be in this region. Currently a college freshmen so still learning a lot. I enjoy skateboarding its about the only "sport" I have gotten into in my life. Starting a new job soon, night shifts, so that plus school will make it hard to be here much but it looks like a great place so I'll do my best. I can speak Spanish, so cool name Tierra de Madre Look forward to meeting you all soon!

Thanks, Brave New World. I can't speak Spanish, but I'm learning. Same with the skateboarding. But I longboard. Can you do mad-cool tricks?

Hello Timothia, no questions at the moment thank you! I am just trying to get familiarized with the region, so if there's anything I should know then please share? That's cool Tierra maybe some day we can hold a conversation in Spanish. And as for the tricks, I am working on them...I can do a few but there is much more I want to learn. Also are you learning to longboard just to ride or will you do those gnarly slides longboarders do too? Just curious

At the moment I longboard just to ride, because it's cool and I like going fast and I like learning new skillz. So far the only slide I've done has been off the board and on the road... I didn't ride for two months after that. But one day maybe I'll be able to do mad-cool slides, I've watched some good clips of it! Edit: Pure gold.

Nice, its always fun feeling the wind as you ride.
Ouch! Hope it didn't have anything to do with your face, I've had one too many of those.
And one day, I'll have do mad-cool tricks, so we will be pro boarders!
Hm, note taken

Shiz you skateboard don't you?
Nah, kept my face off the road, luckily I had the foresight (of stacking it?) to be wearing gloves and went hands first.

I used to, years ago. I'll mess around in the half pipe sometimes.

Hands first can still be dangerous! Roll next time But at least the face was safe. Shiz did you really, nice any tricks or skills you can still do on the half pipe?

Hands first can still be dangerous! Roll next time But at least the face was safe. Shiz did you really, nice any tricks or skills you can still do on the half pipe? I've had a few concussions that have scared be away from going all out. I used to be really big into street stuff, and I really liked handrails. One time I started a boardslide on a hand rail, but it didn't feel right so I kicked the board out to bail. I had enough speed that when I hopped off, I cleared the stair set and the rail and landed at the bottom. When I kicked the board out, I guess it was just flipping under me the whole time, and when I landed, the board landed too, right under my feet. People thought I did it on purpose, and it was almost the coolest thing anybody had ever seen. The problem was that I wasn't trying to do anything and I didn't even know the board was anywhere near me, but I still landed on the board. Since I wasn't ready to land, the board slides out from under my feet and I flipped pretty much upside down. The last thing I remembered was a fuzzy 'squish' sound when the side of my head slammed into the pavement, then I was suddenly laying down in the backseat of my buddy's car. When I went to the hospital I learned that I hit my head hard enough to knock the bones in my ear around. Because of that, whenever I tried to walk I would lean to the right until I collapsed. It took a couple of weeks to be able to walk without assistance, and even now I'll lose balance at odd times. I've lost a lot of the desire for big tricks and high speed since then.

Well damn, that's pretty intense...
Yea handrails are arguably the most dangerous part of street skating, they are the easiest place to get broken if you do something wrong. That is crazy though, I haven't gotten a concussion that bad! Falling every time you walked, I could see why you stopped on the handrails.
But what about other types of street skating? Like gaps and stairs? Its actually very less likely to get a concussion like that just jumping down stairs, a lot easier to bail. But losing balance up to date could be a problem I guess...
Have you talked to a physician about losing your balance still? Like is there some long term damage or is it just something that can't be fixed? I still have the high speed desire, I don't get much time anymore but whenever I can I try.

Hello,
my nation is Tangaroan Islands. I will start by saying I am not a native English speaker, I'm from the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. I'm currently a student at university where I am studiing to become a pharmacist. In regards to my experience on NationStates, I must regret that I have never played it so I'll need to learn a lot.

NationStates probably seems like a pretty simple game at first, but as you learn more you'll find there are a lot of complicated things going on. It makes it fun.
Don't worry about your English. We've got somewhat of an international community here, with Australians, an Australian in Japan, a Greek, a few Americans, and someone from the UK. I'm probably missing a few people, but we're always happy to bring some more culture to the region!

Great to have you Tangaroan Islands! Seems like your English is pretty good though, I don't think you'll have any problems here.
